A research study at Sudha Institute of Environment & Technology Varaanasi identifies the use of Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques to improve management of groundwater and surface waters. The project has wide implications for water management and environmental health. It has been supported by the Department of Environment, Forestry & Climate Change, Government of India. This article also discusses the Institute’s teaching and research activities.
Using Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques to improve management of surface and groundwater resources
Accurate simulation of physical processes can be difficult. However, with the use of data-driven methods, it is possible to predict changes in groundwater levels without knowing the physical parameters. Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques recognize hidden patterns in historical data and apply them to future scenarios. This study demonstrates how these techniques can help managers manage surface and groundwater resources. The results will be helpful in the selection and implementation of appropriate models.
Various models have been developed to manage water resources. SVM models outperform ANN and regression models. In addition, they identify mode mixing as the main limitation of EMD implementation. Using the SVM model, EMD can be calculated using equations (26).
Teaching
The School of Biotechnology at Sudha Institute of Environmental and Technology is a pioneer in health management. It is one of the premier education identities in India and recently opened its newest state-of-the-art school in Varanasi. In addition, the school offers environmental education and training. Its goal is to educate future environmental leaders and improve resource utilisation. It is a global leader in health care education, and has a strong tradition of integrating science with the environment.
Research
Professor BDTF Trust, the University of Varanasi, has set up a Centre for Environmental Education and Research (SEER). The institute is registered under the Indian Trusts Act 1882 and NITI Ayog, and is certified under the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System. It offers training and educational programs related to environmental protection and pollution. It is also an accredited member of the National Association of Universities for Research in the Environment (NACE).
